Exposición: "Arte y Ciencia"/Exhibition: "Art and Science"

Pocas disciplinas aúnan ciencia y arte como la ilustración científica, materia que tiene como objetivo principal comunicar, a científicos, a estudiantes y al público en general, conceptos científicos no siempre fáciles de explicar con palabras.

Very few disciplines bring together science and art like scientific illustrations. It is a subject whose main objective is to communicate scientists, students and the general public, scientific concepts that are not always easy to explain with words.

La utilización de imágenes como medio de transmisión de información científica quedó firmemente establecida durante el Renacimiento y desde entonces la enseñanza de las ciencias naturales no se concibe sin su uso. Hoy en día, es un medio imprescindible de enseñanza, comunicación y divulgación de la ciencia, presente en disciplinas tan variadas como la medicina, la botánica, la zoología, la astronomía, la paleontología, arqueología, etc.

The use of images as a means of scientific information transmission was firmly established in the Renaissance and since then, the teaching of natural science cannot be conceived without its use. Nowadays, the use of scientific illustrations is an essential teaching method, a means of communication and scientific spreading present in disciplines so diverse as medicine, botany, zoology, astronomy, paleontology, archaeology, etc.

La exposición “Arte y Ciencia”, realizada en la biblioteca del centro en el marco de nuestro proyecto STEAM, mostró a los alumnos un área del saber poco conocida, a la vez que trató de despertar su interés por la anatomía humana, fomentar el aprecio por las plantas, aves y mamíferos mediante la belleza y claridad de las ilustraciones y concienciar al alumno de que el idioma de la ciencia es el inglés.

The exhibition “Art and Science”, carried out in the school library and included in our project “CITE-STEAM”, showed students an unknown branch of knowledge while arose students’ interest in human anatomy and promoted a taste for plants, birds and mammals through the beauty and clarity of illustrations. It also showed students that English is the language of science.

La muestra ha consistido en una serie de láminas que describen mediante imágenes y breves explicaciones el desarrollo parejo de la anatomía humana y su ilustración, junto a estos se expusieron imágenes de dibujos anatómicos hechos por alumnos de 3º de ESO durante las clases de biología. También se expusieron libros sobre ilustración científica. Buena parte de estos libros, en sí mismos, bellamente ilustrados, están escritos en inglés, hecho que también nos sirvió para concienciar de la importancia de esta lengua en la comunicación científica.

The exhibition is made up of a series of posters that describe, through images and short explanations, the parallel development of human anatomy and its illustration. Images of anatomic drawings made by 3º ESO STUDENTS were exhibited as well as books about scientific illustrations. Most of these books are beautifully illustrated and written in English what made students think about the importance of this language in scientific communication.
